Venue: The University of Tampa

The meeting will be held on The University of Tampa campus, a beautiful location in downtown Tampa, Florida (USA).

The University of Tampa (UT) is located a short walk from excellent downtown dining, close to walking paths along the Hillsborough River, and with minimal travel time from the Tampa International Airport (TPA; 8 miles from campus), via airport shuttle or bus. In addition, we are located 85 miles from the Orlando International Airport (MCO) for additional international flight options.

The meeting sessions will be housed in the Vaughn building (Building # 40, 9th floor; see campus map), with preparation rooms and small conference rooms available for our use on the 2nd floor.

Campus dining is available in a cafeteria located on the 1st floor of Vaughn (# 44 on map; hours). On campus housing will be located in McKay Hall, building #20 on the downloadable map. Navigate the campus actively using this interactive map.

Accomodation

We  have secured on-campus dormitory housing for participants ($56 USD inclusive per night per person, double room occupancy). The dormitory selected has in-room sinks and mirrors and shared restroom/shower facilities, and can be reserved as single rooms or double rooms (either identify a roomate or one can be assigned). Housing can be reserved and paid for via the Registration and Payment tab. If you would prefer to pay for housing upon arrival, please email us at syngbio2017@ut.edu to reserve a room.

For  those seeking the amenities of a hotel, we have have negotiated a reduced room rate for a block of rooms at the TownePlace Suites by Marriott Tampa Westshore located 6 miles from the meeting (about a 10-15 minute drive; shuttles can be arranged). Prices are $134+tax per night, courtesy code to receive the rate is Book your group rate for 3rd Syng Bio Courtesy, and the block of rooms will be held until 4/23/2017, so make your reservations prior to that date.


Travel & Transportation

Parking will be limited on UT campus during the event, but there are restaurants, entertainment, and pharmacies/grocery stores located within walking distance of campus, so a car is not necessary for the duration of the meeting. If you should have need of a vehicle, we do have Zipcar on campus (click here for details). In addition, there is a public bus and streetcar system that can get you to locations in downtown Tampa and our two night-life locations, Channelside and the historic Ybor City which can be found here

Directions to campus (from UT website):
From the North: 
I-75 South to I-275 South. Continue on I-275 to Exit 45A (Downtown East-West). Follow signs for Downtown-West and then take the Ashley Drive/Tampa St. Exit. Stay to the right for Downtown-West, and then get in the left lane for Ashley Drive. Follow Ashley Drive to Kennedy Boulevard. Turn right on Kennedy Boulevard, crossing the Hillsborough River. Turn right at the first light at the main entrance of the University. 

From the East: 
I-4 West to the I-4 and I-275 split. Exit 45A (Downtown East-West). Follow signs for Downtown-West and then take the Ashley Drive/Tampa St. Exit. Stay to the right for Downtown-West, and then get in the left lane for Ashley Drive. Follow Ashley Drive to Kennedy Boulevard. Turn right on Kennedy Boulevard, crossing the Hillsborough River. Turn right at the first light at the main entrance of the University. 

From the South: 
I-75 North to Exit 256 (Crosstown Expressway). Crosstown Expressway to Exit 8 (Kennedy Boulevard/Downtown-East). Continue on Kennedy Boulevard through downtown Tampa. Cross the Hillsborough River, and then turn right at the first light at the main entrance of the University. 

From the West: 
I-275 North to Exit 44 (Downtown West). Ashley Dr. south to Kennedy Boulevard. Turn right on Kennedy Boulevard, crossing the Hillsborough River. Turn right at the first light at the main entrance of the University. 

From Tampa International Airport: 
Florida 60 East to I-275 North (Downtown) to Exit 44 (Downtown West). Ashley Dr. south to Kennedy Boulevard. Turn right on Kennedy Boulevard, crossing the Hillsborough River. Turn right at the first light at the main entrance of the University. The University of Tampa is eight miles from the airport and a taxi will cost about $25 plus tip. There is also a public bus available (Route 30 on the attached map; schedules for this route available here). This bus runs roughly every ½ hour from Tampa International Airport to campus.

From Orlando International Airport:
Take FL-528West/FL-528 Toll W 2.3 miles towards I-4, and take I-4 west towards Tampa. After 83 miles, take I-275 South to North Ashley Drive exit in Tampa. Turn right on West Tyler Avenue, which will become Cass Street, and make a left onto UT University Drive . The distance to campus is 85 miles, and car rental services are available. Public transit between Orlando and Tampa is very poor, so if you need to make the trip, we do recommend car rental.

Points of Interest

Tampa Riverwalk is a walking trail along the Hillsborough River immediately adjacent to campus.

The Florida Aquarium is a partner for our meeting and we will be holding events there, but it has a wonderful set of exhibits to explore, focused on Florida coastal habitats.

Tampa Bay History Center is a delightful museum focused on the history of Florida, located a pleasant walk from campus along the Riverwalk.

Visit Tampa Bay is a website providing additional information on the amenities and tourist attractions the city offers, with a searchable database of events going on in the city. They have a discount guide for visitors to Tampa, with maps and information for points of interest as well as special deals. 

Local Restaurants:
Oxford Exchange: a coffee/tea house and restaurant located just across Kennedy Blvd. from the Vaughn Building.

Malio’s Prime Steakhouse: a lovely restaurant located just across the Hillsborough River from UT campus with a view of the river itself.

Bamboozle describes themselves as a location where “old French style meets Asian flair”.

Fly Bar and Restaurant: a great place for those looking to go and talk science over libations, with a lovely rooftop deck, live music, and an eclectic flair a short walk from campus.

Ulele: located a slightly longer walk north of campus right on the river, and features local microbrews and “Florida” foods, with an amazing view of the river!

There are many other local restaurants, see a longer list here
